Safer BDSM - Bondage & Clamps
Bondage
We mentioned it already earlier, as a TOP you have to be aware of
everything that is going on in a scene and especially when you tie someone up you have to
pay close attention to the person's vital functions. Make sure that you do not cut off
circulation or stretch muscles too much. Ignoring this can lead to embarrassing hospital
trips, not to mention possible permanent damage to nerves.
There are several reasons for tying up your partner:
- to keep her/him in a special position,
- to prevent that person from escaping from you,
- to give her/him the feeling of helplessness,
- bondage can be a very exciting and erotic art.
Safety
- Make sure that you do not cut off circulation. If body parts get cold or turn blue,
immediately untie your partner.
- NEVER leave a tied up person alone!
- Agree on a safe word or sign
- NEVER place a rope around a person's neck
- Make sure you can open the bonds quickly in case you have to (scissors, keys etc.)
- So called Panic Hooks can be very helpful - they can always be opened
quickly even under load.

Bondage Tools
- Soft ropes (for a body bondage (also known as Japanese Bondage) you need at least about
20m (60 feet) of rope)
- Silk Scarfs (very hard to untie)
- Straps (easy, fast to use and cheap)
- Leather wrist and/or ankle cuffs ($35-$150) - make sure the leather has no sharp edges.
- Steel cuffs (see Basics)
Clamps
Clamps are usually used to give the sensation of pain to certain body parts. They can
be used on a lot of regions of the body. You can use a simple wooden clamp
(clothes pin) or a high tech
clamp, a few things are important for all of them
- Everyone reacts differently to them, one person can find them very stimulating and for
another it can be very unerotic and the end of a scene (see Communication).
- A clamp can cut of the blood circulation, make sure you always keep an eye on it.
- NEVER fix them on veins to prevent blood circulation!
- Make sure the clamp has no sharp edges.
- Clamps with screws (often sold in Sex Shops) are nothing for beginners.
It's hard to know how tight you've screwed them, and they
are sometimes hard to remove.
- The more skin you take between the clamp the safer it is.
- Breasts and especially the nipples are a highly sensitive region, always watch the
reaction of your partner when fixing clamps on them.
